'Ko' to 'Maanadu': Five Tamil films based on political backdrop
Tamil cinema audiences have witnessed many kinds of genres in the history of cinema. There are a few genres, which are rarely touched by filmmakers in Tamil cinema, and one among them is films based on political subjects. The problems and issues that a political film creates in society made filmmakers aside from it. But few have touched the genre with courage and succeeded with it. Have a look at the five Tamil films from 'Ko' to 'Maanadu' that are based on political backdrop.

'Ko'
The 2011 political thriller features Jiiva, Karthika Nair, Ajmal, Piaa Bajpai, Prakash Raj, and Kota Srinivasa Rao in the lead roles. Director KV Anand has explained the desire of a young man, and the steps taken by him to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The film portrayed the tricks in politics, and how a new group of youngsters work for their dream. The film was a great hit, and a sequel of the film was made later in 2016.

'Uriyadi'
The young director Vijay Kumar, through his directorial debut, bravely presented a caste-based political film. Interestingly, he also played the lead in the film. Vijay Kumar has presented the film with strong dialogues, and it turned out as one of the best political thrillers in Tamil cinema. 'Uriyadi' features Vijay Kumar, Mime Gopi, Citizen Sivakumar, and others, while the music was scored by an Indian musical band Masala Coffee. 'Uriyadi' also had a sequel and the director explained a different issue with it.

'NOTA'
Anand Shankar joined hands with Vijay Devarakonda for the Tamil Telugu bilingual political thriller 'NOTA' in 2018. But a package of two different political happenings in two different states didn't meet the expectations. The story of the film is about the Chief Minister's son played by Vijay Devarakonda, and the film received mixed reviews.

'Thalaivi'
The much-expected film 'Thalaivi' is a biopic of late TN Chief Minister and actress J Jayalalitha. AL Vijay has carried the more political shades of J Jayalalitha, and the film is set to hit the big screens soon. Kangana Ranaut plays the role of J Jayalalitha and the actress worked hard to match her role as her character portrays different ages.

'Maanadu'
Silamabarasan has joined hands with Venkat Prabhu for the political thriller 'Maanadu', and he plays a Muslim youngster for the first time in his career. Silamabarasan wished to break the views of some people on Muslims in the country, and he will be seen as a strong social fighter in the film. Kalyani Priyadarshan plays as his pair in the film, while the music is scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
