'KGF' to 'Premam': Five times when other language releases ruled the TN box office

Tamil cinema has always been a friendly industry, as it has never backed away from giving the space for movies from other Indian languages. Tamil cinema fans have also welcomed those releases grandly and have also extended their appreciation for good films. Sometimes, those other language movies have performed on par with Tamil releases, and given a tough competition at the box office. 'Naan Ee'

Samantha, Nani, and Sudeep starrer 'Naan Ee' is about a youngster's rebirth as a housefly to take revenge for his death and safeguard his girlfriend. The VFX works for the film was exceptional and even made the audience create a make-believe among them that the housefly shown in the film was real. The Telugu thriller drama directed by SS Rajamouli, received huge praise from the Tamil audience, and it opened the gates for Nani, Sudeep, and SS Rajamouli in Kollywood.

'Chennai Express'

The romantic Bollywood drama 'Chennai Express' features Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. The story of the film is about a sudden meeting of a Mumbai youngster and a Tamil girl during a train journey, and how their life got changed after the meeting. Even though it's a Hindi film, the story happens mostly in Tamil Nadu, and Shah Rukh Khan also dedicated a song to Rajinikanth in the film. These two reasons made the film a huge hit in TN.

'Premam'

The Malayalam romantic drama 'Premam' paved a grand entry for Malayalam films into Kollywood. Nivin Pauly, Sai Pallavi, Anupama Parameswaran, and Madonna Sebastian starrer was well enjoyed by Tamil cinema fans, and had a good run in the theatres in Tamil Nadu. The lead stars then became popular faces for the Tamil audience as they played pivotal roles in Tamil films later.

'RRR'

SS Rajamouli's mega-budget directorial 'RRR' features Ram Charan and Jr.NTR in main roles. The original Telugu release was dubbed in several Indian languages including Tamil, and the film occupied a record number of screens in Tamil Nadu. The grand film received positive reviews, and it helped the film to score big at the TN box office, while the worldwide collection is over Rs 1000 crores.

'KGF: Chapter 2'

Yash starrer 'KGF' : Chapter 1' struggled to get screens in Tamil Nadu theatres initially, but the film picked up well as it got many positive responses from the audience. Coming to the second installment ,'KGF: Chapter 2', the post-release WOM made the film a huge success and even clashed with Vijay's 'Beast' at the box office. Despite the clash, the action drama has been a huge hit in TN by grossing massive numbers.
