The Kanthaswamy teams village adoption scheme seems to be under the scanner. At the time of the audio launch, director Susi Ganeshan and producer Kalaipuli S Thanu, had adopted three villages and 27 more were to be taken care of by entrepreneurs and industrialists in the city.
However, there have been reports that this adoption scheme never took off and it was all done for publicity . A source alleges, The Kanthaswamy team hasnt made any progress in this regard. It seems like their only goal was to promote their film through this announcement.
When CT contacted the films producer Thanu, he agreed that the project has been in limbo but adds that the reason for this is the internal politics in these villages. Claims Thanu, We zeroed in on three villages and carried out some nominal developmental activities (like laying roads, refurbishing a noon meal centre) before the films 100th day. We wanted to hold the 100th day celebrations in Vannivelampatti in Madurai and even printed the invites. But some villagers were against this idea and so we held the event in Chennai and donated 3 lakh to representatives of that village.
Thanu says their intentions were honourable but it was only the lack of cooperation from villagers that hindered the programme. He adds, As some villages were divided on caste, each group wanted to claim the money. In one instance, we were even mobbed by the villagers.
A production manager, who identified the villages to be adopted, says that they demanded work that overshot the budget. They wanted us to dredge ponds or build bridges, which would cost more than 20 lakh. Such works come under the purview of the government. We said that we would instead build toilets and repair schools, but they said that they didnt need such help. In one village, we were faced with the issue of which labour group to employ. The whole project created mental stress, he says.
