Actor Unnikrishnan Namboothiri, who passed away at the age of 98 today, had briefly been part of Tamil films. After playing a bed-ridden old patriarch in
Rajiv Menon's multi-starrer musical drama Kandukondain Kandukondain, in 2000, he had played a grandfather again in Mouli's comedy drama Pammal K Sambandam, which had
Kamal Haasan and
Simran in the lead roles.
The late actor appeared as a grandfather in both the movies. While he played
Tabu and
Aishwarya Rai's grandfather in Kandukondain Kandukondain, the scenes between him and Kamal Haasan, who played a grandfather and grandson in Pammal K Sambandam, contributed to the emotionally heavy moments in that movie.
Interestingly, in both the films, Unnikrishnan's character passes away, and a will that is left by his character becomes crucial to the plot!
Kamal has now shared his tribute to his onscreen grandfather with a post on social media. "Unnikrishnan Namboodiri, who came to acting at the age of 73, made Malayalees laugh for 18 years. He strode the world of art as a grandfather filled with youthful vigour. He was supposed to be a centurion in two more years but has left us today. Heartfelt condolences," the Ulaganayagan wrote.
Rajiv Menon also mourned the loss of Unnikrishnan on his social media handle. The filmmaker wrote, "RIP #UnnikrishnanNamboothiri, brought the Uyee Uyee thaatha of #kandukondainkandukondain to life and made it one of the most loved grandfather character in Tamil cinema ! We will miss your mischievous eyes which could turn into despair in a flash."
