Kalai's role inspired by blind MasterChef winner

While we had told you that actor Kalaiyarasan's character in

Adhe Kangal

is that of a chef, we now learn that there is a uniqueness to the character, which will be let out in the film's teaser that is being released today. His character is blind, a factor which is crucial to the film's plot. The film's director, debutant Rohin Venkatesan tells us that he was actually inspired from a MasterChef winner while creating this character.

'Kalai's character had to be blind, and I wanted to give him a job that showed audiences that he was a self-supporting entrepreneur. That is when I came to know about Christine H', who was the title winner of the third season of MasterChef US. We felt that turning this character into a blind chef like H' would work,' says the director.

Rohin and his team watched videos of Christine H', who lost her vision due to medical condition, to understand how a visually challenged chef works in the kitchen, and incorporated those into the character's traits. 'We showed these videos to Kalaiyarasan so that he could use all the insights ' how to hold things, how to cut vegetables, how the positioning of the fingers differs, how smell and texture play a crucial role for such a chef and so on,' says Rohin, who visited blind schools and eye doctors in the city with the actor as part of their research.
