Blame it on the IPL. With the local team, Chennai Super Kings making it to the finals of this years edition of the Indian Premier League in style and increasing abundantly hopes of a title win for the second consecutive year, the city seems to be in the grip of cricket mania. Sadly, that has been fatal for cinema, the other major talking point in the city.
None of the Tamil movies that released on Friday Vimals Ethan, Jayarams Sabaash Sariyana Potti and Maaveran, the Tamil dubbed version of the Telugu blockbuster Magadheera have performed well at the box office and looks like the trend will continue over the weekend if one has to go by the advance bookings. While the fact that the films dont feature a major star might be a factor, trade analysts attribute the IPL to be the overwhelming factor.
The other significant element is the release of two heavyweight Hollywood films The Hangover Part 2 and Kung Fu Panda 2 and the good showing of previous Hollywood releases, Pirates Of The Carribean: On Stranger Tides and Fast Five.
Interestingly, the new Hollywood releases are running to packed shows with reports suggesting that tickets are being sold on the black for The Hangover sequel.
