Ilaiyaraaja asked to step out of Srivilliputhur Andal temple sanctum; viral video sparks debate

Ilaiyaraaja, a legendary composer not only in Tamil cinema but also across Indian cinema, often garners attention with his controversial remarks. However, a recent incident involving him at the famous Andal Temple in Srivilliputhur, Virudhunagar district, has gone viral on social media, leaving many shocked.

The globally renowned Andal Temple, which also houses the iconic Rajagopuram featured in Tamil Nadu's state emblem, recently hosted a private event called "Divya Pasuram Natyanjali." This event showcased compositions by Ilaiyaraaja and was organized by a private entity at the temple’s Adi Pura Kottagai premises. Ilaiyaraaja, a Rajya Sabha MP and celebrated music composer, attended the event alongside Chinna Jeeyar (Sadagopa Ramanuja Jeeyar) from Hyderabad. They were formally welcomed by the temple management, operating under Tamil Nadu’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. Ilaiyaraaja and his entourage received a grand reception, complete with the temple elephant, ceremonial drum beats, and poornakumbham honors.

During his visit, Ilaiyaraaja entered the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) to seek the darshan of Andal and Rangamannar. However, temple priests and Jeeyar Swami, adhering to temple protocols, requested him to step outside the sanctum. Ilaiyaraaja compiled and completed his darshan from outside, after which he was honored with ceremonial offerings.
This incident, where Ilaiyaraaja briefly entered the sanctum, sparked discussions at the temple and online. Following this, he continued his visit to the North Patra Sai shrine and Periya Perumal temple for darshan before attending the song launch event. A video of the incident has since gone viral, adding another layer of intrigue to his visit.
