I hope people watch my film before college admissions begin: Mathi Maran

Mathi Maran, a former associate of Vetri Maaran, is making his debut as a director with Selfie, which stars GV Prakash Kumar, Varsha Bollamma, and Gautham Vasudev Menon in the lead roles. The director says that he was inspired by a real-life incident and came up with this script.

"One of my relatives had bought a new car when he was only in his second year of college. I was shocked to hear that. He had sold that car the very next year. When I started exploring, I learnt that he had worked as a college admission broker and was successful, but there were troubles when he started getting deep into this underworld. I decided to make a screenplay based on this, on education and the mafia in it," he elaborates.

Mathi Maran insists that the title has a reason and isn't just something that he has used because it is a commercially viable title. "It also works as a metaphor as the film is about the self-introspection of a college boy. This is why the film's tagline is 'Confessions of an engineer'," he adds.

With college admissions round the corner, he urges people to watch the film to see how ordinary people and their dreams are exploited in the name of education. "Tamil Nadu is seen as a model state when it comes to education, with its social justice and bilingual policies playing a key role. At the same time, there is an evil side to it as this has led to the creation of a mafia in the education sector. I hope this film becomes a discussion point for the society," he signs off.
