#HindiTheriyadhuPoda: Five actors who struggled with Hindi in Tamil films

Over the weekend, a new hashtag #HindiTheriyadhuPoda, meaning 'Don’t know Hindi', began trending on Twitter. The trend had apparently begun after young actor Metro Shirish posted a picture of himself with music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, wearing a T-shirt with strong messages against Hindi imposition. While Yuvan's T-shirt read, 'I am Tamil speaking Indian', Shirish's read, 'I don't know Hindi'. While the hashtag continues to trend, here's a look at some of the Tamil actors who played characters that struggled to speak Hindi in their films, but the scenes turned out to be hit…

Bhagyaraj's 'Indru Poi Naalai Vaa'

How can someone forget the famous dialogue from K Bhagyaraj’s ‘Indru Poi Naalai Vaa’ (1981)! In the movie, which became a superhit, one of the main characters learns the language to win over a girl and sings a Tamil song mixed with Hindi phrases. The famous Hindi dialogue is "Ek gaon mein ek kisan Raghuthatha". Bhagyaraj has earlier revealed that he thought it would be a comedy that would strike a chord with the people as there were all these protests against Hindi imposition even when he did his schooling.

Vijay Vasanth in 'Chennai 600028 II'

While the song 'Saroja Saman Nikalo', a peppy number from Venkat Prabhu’s Chennai 600028, became a hit, actor Vijay Vasanth, who played a young Gopi in the film, played an older guy in the mid-30s in the sequel of the film. Interestingly, he is married to Poonam, played by Anjena Kirti, a North Indian girl from Sowcarpet. He seems to be stuggling to converse in Hindi with his wife and in one particular scene, while talking to Aravind Akash, he says 'Veliyea Jaavo', mixing Hindi and Tamil, meaning 'get out'. The dialogue struck a chord with the audience and has been used often.

Sathyaraj in 'Anna Nagar Mudhal Theru'

Veteran actor Sathyaraj-starrer ‘Anna Nagar Mudhal Theru’ showed residents steadfast in their belief that only a Hindi-speaking Gurkha could rid the colony of robbers, only to be proved wrong. The star actor fools the residents of the area by posing a Gurkha from North India and his effort to speak Hindi in the movie turns out to be funny.

5/6

Jagan in 'Paiyaa'

Karthi is a young, carefree, unemployed man staying in Bangalore, who decides to take a troubled Tamannaah from Bangalore to Mumbai in his car. Jagan, who plays Karthi's friend in the film, stays in Mumbai and his encounters with the locals in the area, especially, in Hindi are hilarious. He becomes frightened after Karthi beats up Milind Soman's men and immediately drives him out of the city. He also changes his looks to avoid any more involvement in their gang.

Vijay Sethupathi in 'Naanum Rowdy Dhaan'

After seeing Nayanthara for the first time at the police station, Vijay Sethupathi seems to have fallen for her and follows her on his bike. He then gets into the police jeep, in which she is being taken back home. Not knowing Nayanthara is hearing impaired, he tries to converse with her from behind and also tries his luck by uttering a couple of Hindi film names to know if she knows Hindi as she doesn't respond to his queries in Tamil first.
