Gautham Karthik has gone back in time for 1947-August16, a period drama bankrolled by AR Murugadoss. Directed by the filmmaker’s long-time associate NS Ponkumar, this film is set in the background of India’s fight for freedom. Kumar says, “The story is about villagers’ understanding of freedom, and looks at events that happen the day before and the day after we got our independence.
There are a bunch of characters in the film - an old couple, a zameendar, two British officers, and a young girl who yearns for something, and a group of people who talk about their problems in a humourous way. Among them is Gautham's character, a young and a carefree boy. He is a mischievous person, who is always up to something. I felt Gautham can pull this off really well as he's a good performer, too.”
The filmmaker says that Gautham has worked hard to get into the skin of the character. "In the film, he has to speak in Tirunelveli dialect. He started learning the slang and body language two months in advance. He also got a tan to suit the mood of the film," he elaborates. The team has already begun shooting near Vellore. “We have erected a village set on a hill near Vellore. Newcomer Revathy plays Gautham's love interest, while
Pugazh will be seen in a role that portrays humour and emotions equally.
Madhusudhan Rao is also part of this period film,” he informs.
In a press statement, producer AR Murugadoss says, "1947- August 16th is an ambitious and honest story that I came across. It is a significant and heart touching piece of work that demanded to be told and heard. This will stay with you forever once you see it."
