"Wow time flies!! 15 years ago today first time I said “start camera action”!! God and u guys are very kind and still keeping me going!! Forever indebted to u guys for giving me a place in ur heart. Love u @charanproducer na #chennai600028 #EngaAreaUllaVaradhey," the

Maanaadu

director posted on his Twitter page.

Chennai 600028, which released on April 27, 2007, is considered as one of the first in a wave of new-age films that ushered in a new era of filmmaking in Tamil cinema. The film, starring a bunch of newcomers who have now gone on to become household names, including

Mirchi Shiva

, Jai, Premgi Amaren, Nitinsathyaa, Arvind Akash, Vijayalakshmi and Vijay Vasanth among others, revolved around the then novel phenomenon of

street cricket

with friendship as its core theme.

Soon after its release, thanks to incredible word of mouth, the film became a sleeper hit and was one of the most successful films of the year. It also resulted in a sequel — Chennai 600028 II — which reunited the cast of the original film and was warmly received by the audiences.

Venkat Prabhu is currently busy giving the finishing touches to Maanaadu, his most awaited political thriller (reportedly with a time loop angle) starring Silambarasan TR, Kalyani Priyadarshan,

SJ Suryah

, and Bharathirajaa among others.
