Deepavali 2010 in Kollywood is going to be a low-key affair. For the first time ever, no superstar film is releasing for the second biggest festival in Tamil Nadu. Kamal Haasans Manmadhan Ambu and Vijays Kavalan, which were planned as Deepavali releases, have been postponed to December as both the films are still in the post-production stage. The four films which have announced November 5 as their release date are the Dhanush-Genelia-starrer Uthamaputhiran, Action King Arjuns Vallakottai, Va Quarter Cutting which has Shiva, SP Charan and Lekha Washington in the lead and Mynaa, which stars Vidharth and Amala Paul. Among the four, the producers of Uthamaputhiran have claimed that they are releasing the film in 600 screens in Tamil Nadu alone! Interestingly, Rajinikanths Endhiran was released in lesser number of screens in TN!
The hype and hoopla around Deepavali has already begun. The Mithran R Jawahar-directed Uthamaputhiran falls into the genre of family comedy. A remake of the Telugu hit Ready. the film is expected to cater to family audiences who throng theatres during festival times. The director and his hero have a proven track record (Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Kutty) and this film, if successful, will complete the hat-trick. The chemistry between Dhanush and Genelia and Vivekhs comedy are said to be the films highlights.
Arjun is trying to regain his lost glory as an action hero with A Venkateshs Vallakottai, in which Haripriya is the glam element and Vincent Asokan, one of the bad guys. This film too is a remake; Mammoottys superhit in Malayalam, Maayavi, being the original. Arjun has five getups in this film in which he plays a vigilante. The action scenes are its highlights and it should appeal to the mass audiences.
What is interesting is that two small films Mynaa and Va Quarter Cutting have managed to find screens for the festival of lights. Mynaa is touted to be a realistic film with newcomers. Directed by Prabhu Solomon, the film created a buzz when Udhayanidhi Stalin purchased it. With
Kamal Haasan and Udhayanidhi showering praise on the film at its audio launch, the buzz has only gotten bigger.
The Dhayanidhi Alagiri-marketed Va Quarter Cutting, is directed by Pushkar and Gayatri. Set in Chennai, the film focusses on the journey of two characters in one night and the people they meet. The quirky trailers of this comedy have caught the fancy of the multiplex crowd.
The trade believes the Deepavali fireworks is actually between Mynaa and Va Quarter Cutting, as Udhayanidhi and Dhayanidhi are releasing their films on the same day.
