Fashion statements from K'wood stars over the decade

If you thought Kollywood was all about keeping it simple and casual, think again. This decade proved to be a game-changer when it came to fashion. Our actors and actresses created their own style statements through their looks in the films. We list down 10 such looks and fashion statements that ruled the decade...

2/11

Salt-and-pepper hairdo, Vinayak Mahadev

The salt-and-pepper hairdo is a worldwide phenomenon, popularised by the studs of Hollywood. In Kollywood, however, it was Thala Ajith who was the first to ace the suave look in Mankatha. The look went on to fetch many accolades for the actor and set a new trend among fashionable men.

3/11

Kandangi sari, Niranjana

Nayanthara often looks her fashionable best on and off the screen. But her sari choices in Viswasam were a league apart. The checkered sari of vivid colours is called the Kandangi sari, which is a popular Chettinad fabric. And unsurprisingly, the look went on to become a phenomenon at textile shops, soon enough.

4/11

Coloured shades, Vijay Kumar

Vijay plays two different roles in Theri, in which his styling choices, too, changed and stood out, accordingly. The vibrant shades that Thalapathy’s DCP Vijay Kumar sports in the film, are a hoot! The jaunty shades soon became a favourite among fans.

5/11

Yellow Kurta, Janu

Trisha has been making fashion statements, well, since the time she began doing movies. If her Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa sari became popular the previous decade, Trisha made headlines again with her simple mustard- yellow kurta in 96. The kurta, which the actress paired with a blue dupatta and jeans, became viral that many outlets started selling the famous ‘Janu’ kurta.

6/11

Round glasses, Maari

Forget John Lenon’s glasses! Dhanush’s round sunglasses that he sported in Maari became quite a style statement. The dark gold-rimmed glasses became a sensation among young boys and girls, so much so that you get Maari glasses at every other local store in the city!

7/11

Silver choker, Mithra

Samantha Akkineni is quite a style icon in both real life and reel life. But her look in Atlee’s Theri, in which she played Mithra, particularly made heads turn. Her beautiful saris, and hairdos apart, Samantha’s silver choker was especially a crowd-pleaser among several women. There were so many replicas of the same designs that were sold in T Nagar!

8/11

Lapel notch suit, Rajinikanth

We all know that superstar Rajinikanth in a suit is style personified. He proved that with his iconic role as Manik Baassha. He proved that yet again in Kabali, wearing a dignified lapel notch suit and vest in a superb shade of gray. Throughout the film, he sports suits in the most elegant of shades. The suit, after all, denotes power and dynamism in the film.

9/11

Taper Fade, Raju bhai

Suriya aka Raju Bhai’s beard and Taper Fade hairstyle in Anjaan was a hit among men. What’s interesting about this look is that it is stylish and suits everyone. Even after so many years, the look is so popular among youngsters. Many stylists are given this as a reference.

10/11

Floral sari, Shilpa

Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Super Deluxe was a film that was dipped in vintage style and chicness. But it was Vijay Sethupathi’s Shilpa who stood out with her suave fashion sense in the film. Her turquoise-coloured sari with a vivid floral print soon became a showstopper in the dark comedy. Visual impact apart, the sari also plays an important role in the film, in a scene-stealing sequence by VSP.

11/11

Fringe braids, Parvathi

Even though Amala Paul’s look was inspired from Priyanka Chopra’s (from Fashion), Amala made the fringe her own in Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi. The simple fringe and braided look she sported as Parvathi worked well with young women who wanted to give their regular braid a twist.
