With the highly anticipated 'Jana Nayagan' of Vijay running into trouble ahead of Pongal, the festival release schedule has undergone a huge shift. The film was anticipated to set the box office on fire during the festive period, but unhindered censor board approval resulted in the delayed scrapping. This controversy has created a void in the theaters that needed to be filled, and thus, the changes were made in the market. As a result, some films have had to take in multiple screens and traffic during festivals, which clearly shows how one postponed release can affect the entire schedule. This includes the Mohan G directed film, 'Draupathi 2'.
Pongal release dropped for 'Draupathi 2'
On the backdrop of these releases, 'Draupathi 2' helmed by Mohan G and starring Richard Rishi, Natty Natraj, among others, also aimed for a Pongal release and was scheduled to release in theatres on January 15. However, the producers have dropped this move. A plethora of releases and continuing negotiations with theatres coaxed the producers to push the release for a smoother distribution. This has highlighted a unique problem in the film business. When there are too many releases on the same day coinciding with peak periods, it might choke the distribution of the film, too many releases, despite the demand of the audience.
'Draupathi 2' new release date announced
The filmmakers have already declared that ‘Draupathi 2’ will make its way to theaters on January 23, the date of birth of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. They said in response to theatre owners' requests to adapt, to achieve improved screening schedules. Mohan G, the director of the film, noted that he worked hard with his team to create the film, and this delay was for the sole purpose of customizing it in order to display it for the audience in the best light. He also wished all the films releasing with Pongal good luck and hoped the audience would unite in the same way for 'Draupathi 2'.
Multiple films step in
Utilizing the surprise time in the Pongal calendar, multiple films have shifted their slots and release dates. Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, ‘Vaa Vaathiyaar’ with Karthi and Krithi Shetty as leads premiered today as a major Pongal release. Out there, Jiiva's 45th film, ‘Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil’, has been preponed despite its release in another slot initially. Therefore, it’s releasing tomorrow.
