Directors who made their mark with their second films
They may not have found a firm foothold in Tamil film industry with their very first film, but they kept it up, waited for the right moment, and came back with a bang with their second film to create an impact. Here are some directors who made everyone sit up and take a good look at their work with their second films, while they debut ones went pretty much unnoticed...
Vignesh Shivan
First film: Poda Podi
Second film: Naanum Rowdy Dhaan
When Kollywood was busy appreciating Vignesh Shivans direction in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, director Gautham Menon tweeted, Poda Podi will now be noticed Vicky..sometimes better late than never.
1x1 polls
He had a point, for, Poda Podi was Vigneshs debut film and though the film was not really appreciated. But with Naanum Vignesh has announced his arrival not an easy one, though. For, after Poda Podi, he wrote the lyrics for Adhaaru Udhaaru, Enakenna Yaarum Illaiye, Engadi Porandhe and Thappa Thaan Theriyum. And it was after he got noticed for his lyrics that he planned his next directorial venture, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.

Vishnu Vardhan
First film: Kurumbu
Second film: Arindhum Ariyaamalum
Vishnu Vardhans first film Kurumbu didnt create any impact in the industry. In this industry, a director who wants to make his first film has to face many a struggle. But a director who didnt make a mark with his first film, to get his second film offer, he has to undergo so much more than a debutant. I had my share of struggles when I wanted to start my second film, Arindhum Ariyamalum, but thankfully, it turned out to be a hit, says Vishnu, looking back.
Vijay Milton
First film: Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu
Second film: Goli Soda
Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu was released in 2006. It was cinematographer-turned-director Vijay Miltons first film as a director. But it didnt do well at the box office and he returned to his first love, cinematography. It was after eight-long years that he took up his second directorial venture, Goli Soda and shot to fame as a director. Goli Soda didnt just do well down south, it was well-received globally too, when screened at the Busan Film Festival.
KV Anand
First film: Kana Kandaen
Second film: Ayan
When renowned cinematographer KV Anand made his directorial debut with Kana Kandaen in 2005, he didnt get the appreciation he had expected. So, he took his time writing the script of his second film, and then he was back after four years with Ayan, starring actors Suriya and Tamannaah, in 2009.
Balaji Sakthivel
First film: Samurai
Second film: Kaadhal
When Kaadhal was released, many didnt know it had been directed by the same person who had helmed Samurai both the films were of totally different genres. While Samurai was about a social issue, Kaadhal was a love story. But Kaadhal did get Balaji his much-needed breakthrough in the industry.
Seenu Ramasamy
First film: Koodal Nagar
Second film: Thenmerku Paruvakaatru
When Thenmerku Paruvakaatru was awarded the National Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, many had to do a Google search with the name, Seenu Ramasamy to see who he was. But the critically acclaimed film marked him as a director to make a note of. Seenu is now readying for his next, Idam Porul Eval, starring Vijay Sethupathi.
