Did Ajith's 'Vidaamuyarchi' makers acquire rights from 'Breakdown' makers? Here's what we know

Ajith Kumar's upcoming film 'Vidaamuyarchi' has been revealed to be an official adaptation of the 1997 Hollywood thriller 'Breakdown', which was directed by Jonathan Mostow. The teaser of 'Vidaamuyarchi' confirmed the 'Breakdown' connection in the Ajith starrer. But there has been a report doing rounds on the internet that 'Breakdown' makers have claimed Rs 150 crore from the 'Vidaamuyarchi' makers for taking inspiration from the Hollywood film. Responding to the latest report, veteran actor Chithra Lakshmanan, who has been in close touch with the 'Vidaamuyarchi' makers, has confirmed through his YouTube chat with Cine This Week that the remake rights of 'Breakdown' were brought by the makers of Ajith's film three months when they realized the Tamil film's connection with the Hollywood film. So, there is no trouble for 'Vidaamuyarchi', and the film is on track to release for Pongal 2025 on January 10.

Ajith Kumar and Trisha are set to portray the roles originally played by Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan, respectively, with Arjun Sarja stepping into the role of the primary antagonist. The Tamil adaptation will retain the core premise of the original, where a couple faces a life-threatening ordeal after their car breaks down during a road trip, leading to the wife's mysterious disappearance. Anirudh Ravichander is scoring the music, and the film is set to strike well at the box office.

The post-production work for 'Vidaamuyarchi' is happening briskly, and Ajith recently completed dubbing for his portions. Director Magizh Thirumeni has left the patchwork and song to complete for the film, and the team will be reuniting for a short schedule next week.
