Charmed by Kovai, singer Shweta Mohan confesses to having thoughts of shifting here I would love to settle down in Coimbatore if only there were more entertainment options in the city, confesses crooner Shweta Mohan, who performed at a concert for children affected by cancer and those with special needs recently.
My husband is into the real estate business, and keeps travelling to Coimbatore regularly on work.
My father also did his schooling here, and the director of a renowned pharmacy in the city is like a family friend. So we have a strong Kovai connection, she quips. We have contemplated settling down in the city, as it has less traffic, glorious weather and some of our best friends who live here. It is only cause of my career that I am currently in Chennai, the singer adds.
Shweta was impressed by the considerable youth support for the melodies of AR Rahman and Ilayaraja, from the 80s and 90s that she crooned, along with renowned singer Srinivas. Though we sang a fair share of classic melodies, it was quite surprising, and heartening to see that most requests for an encore came from the youngsters, who are normally known to groove to peppy numbers. This is true indication that melodies will never go out of vogue, she stresses.
Did being the daughter of a highly accomplished playback singer put additional pressure on her? It worked to my advantage initially, as it was easier to gain access to the bigger music directors being Sujatha Mohans daughter. That being said, there was definitely additional pressure to match up to her standards, and I had to work hard to make a name for myself in the industry. The culmination of that hard work was winning the Kerala State National Award for Best Singer in 2007, which I received in front of my parents. Receiving the award with
Vijay Yesudas made it all the more memorable, she gushes.
Sharing the stage with legendary playback Srinivas also counts as one of her best moments. Srinivas uncle has been my biggest motivator, and not many know that the first song of my career was his composition. He constantly motivates me to sing better, and I would not be half the singer I am without his support and guidance, the
Yamma Yamma singer says, admiringly.
Ive heard a lot about the new mall that has come up here, and will shop to my hearts content during my next visit, she signs off.
