The release of the Hema Committee report by the Kerala government has ignited a crucial discussion on the need for a safe working environment for women in the film industry, as it revealed shocking accounts of sexual harassment faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.
Singer Chinmayi Sripada has recently commented on the report and also stated that such an extensive report or study will not happen in the Tamil film industry.
In an interview with News 18, Chinmayi stated that she believes something as extensive as a Hema Committee report will not happen in Kollywood. The singer, who has previously made several allegations of sexual harassment against lyricist
Vairamuthu and Radha Ravi pointed out the lack of concrete actions against Vairamuthu as an example.
She further pointed out the irony in the recent statement made by MP Saminathan, the Minister for Information & Publicity, who dismissed the existence any such complaints made in the Tamil industry. She stated that nothing will change in Kollywood, because the situation is a cesspool of molesters with power bolstered by ruling parties and politicians.
Chinmayi also asserted that there is not really a possibility of forming a woman’s body like the Women in Cinema Collective in the Tamil industry.

Meanwhile, Chinmayi has recently alleged that women face harassment by a powerful lobby in the South Indian Cine, Television Artistes and Dubbing Artistes Union. Talking to TOI she said, “The cost of a union card is arbitrary and goes up to Rs 1.5 lakh. Women might be asked to go to the house of union leader Radha Ravi to get a card. If a woman refuses, a powerful lobby starts working against her and she will be banned.”
