‘Both Dhanush and Karthi are not available..’ Selvaraghavan on the sequels of ‘Pudhupettai’, and ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’

Director-actor Selvaraghavan, celebrated for his bold and unconventional storytelling, has always stood apart in Tamil cinema. Known for cult favourites like ‘Pudhupettai’, ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ and ‘7G Rainbow Colony’ andhis films often gain recognition long after their release. As he gears up for the release of Aaryan, the filmmaker recently spoke about on sequels Dhanush and Karthi movies.

‘Aayirathil Oruvan 2’ and ‘Pudhupettai 2’ in the works

During a candid chat with Galatta Plus, Selvaraghavan confirmed that work on ‘Pudhupettai’ 2 and ‘Aayirathil Oruvan 2’ has quietly begun. The writing process is underway, but the filmmaker stressed that these sequels cannot happen overnight. “I myself can't decide and get into production for the sake of it. We need to wait for a lot of people. What's the use when I alone take decisions?” he shared.




Reflecting on ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’, he admitted that while the film faced criticism when it released, its growing fan following came much later. “Aayirathil Oruvan getting praised in retrospect adds no value and does nothing to remove the criticisms it initially received,” he said.

Actor availability delays plans

The director also addressed the challenge of bringing back his leading men. “Both Dhanush and Karthi are not available for next three years at least,” he revealed, acknowledging that their busy schedules have slowed progress. However, Selvaraghavan remains open to creative alternatives. “Since I left both films' ending with other characters, I can make these two films without Karthi and Dhanush also,” he said, hinting that the sequels could introduce new characters while continuing the original stories’ spirit.
