Tamil cinema has a rich and diverse history, known for its unique storytelling, strong narratives, and talented actors. 2024 has been a busy year for Tamil cinema fans as they witnessed over 120 new releases in the first six months. But not all films worked well among the audience, as only a few satisfied them. Despite reviews from critics and boosted reviews of social media influences, there are some films that really impressed the fans in 2024. Here is a look at five Tamil movies that delighted fans in the first half of 2024.

'Blue Star'

Directed by S Jayakumar in his directorial debut, 'Blue Star' is a sports drama that is set in a cricket backdrop, and the film was released in theatres last January. The film stars Ashok Selvan, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and Keerthi Pandian in lead roles, with supporting performances by Bagavathi Perumal, Elango Kumaravel, Lizzie Antony, and Prithvi Pandiarajan. Jayakumar delivered an engaging cricket drama, and the film addressing the favorite sport of many turned out to be a favorite film for Kollywood fans as well.

'Lover'

'Lover', which was directed by Prabhu Ram Vyas, was released on February 9, 2024, and it had Manikandan and Sri Gouri Priya in the lead roles, with Kanna Ravi in a supporting role. The story explores the complexities and decay of a contemporary relationship, delving into themes of love, attachment, and emotional struggle. Manikandan delivered an impressive role, while Gouri Priya played an innocent young girl.

'Star'

Directed by Elan, 'Star' is a Tamil coming-of-age romantic drama film and it was released in theatres last May. Kavin, Lal, Aaditi Pohankar, and Preity Mukhundhan played the main roles, and the film music was composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The story revolves around Kalai, played by Kavin, who aspires to become a star in the Tamil film industry despite being from a lower-middle-class background. His journey is marked by various challenges and personal struggles.

'Garudan'

The action thriller 'Garudan' was released in theatres on May 31, 2024, and the film helmed by R.S. Durai Senthilkumar had the story written by Vetrimaaran. 'Garudan' features Soori, M. Sasikumar, Unni Mukundan, Revathi Sharma, and Sshivada, while Yuvan Shankar Raja scored the music. The plot revolves around two childhood friends, Karunakaran (Karuna) and Aditya (Aadhi), whose bond is tested by loyalty and betrayal within their community.

'Maharaja'

'Maharaja' is the 50th film of Vijay Sethupathi, and the film helmed by Nithilan Swaminathan was released in June mid. Anurag Kashyap, Natty, Mamta Mohandas, and Abhirami played important roles alongside the lead actor, and the film is a thriller that combines elements of a whodunit with a deep emotional narrative. Received positive reviews for its complex screenplay and particularly Vijay Sethupathi's brilliant performance turned out to be the powerful portrayal of 'Maharaja'.
