Kennedy Club

is a film that's close to his heart. For, it deals with women's kabaddi, a sport that is close to his heart, especially since his father also runs a kabaddi club. The film, which stars

Bharathirajaa

and Sasikumar, along with a bunch of real kabaddi women players, is nearing completion.

The director says. "My dad has always wanted to document women's kabaddi, their struggles and the politics associated with it. That's what prompted me to make this film. In my native town, women's kabaddi team is very popular. My dad was interested in the sport more than agriculture! For this story, we needed a club that was at least 50 years old. In our state, Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu, Kennedy Club and Lakshmi Mills are the only three clubs that were that old. I've already used 'Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu', and Lakshmi Mills was owned by a private body. So, I opted for 'Kennedy Club'."

Interestingly, the role that Bharathirajaa plays in the film has been inspired from real life. Susienthiran says, "Indian kabaddi team's Rettai Muruganantham's brother Selvam has done a lot for underprivileged female kabaddi players. Even my dad was actively involved in it. Bharathirajaa sir's role has been inspired from that. Sasikumar plays his student. Meenakshi is playing the main lead, and we trained her for eight months in the sport."
