Malayalam actress Anna Ben, who has been part of acclaimed films like Kumbalangi Nights and Helen, will be making her Tamil debut with Kottukkaali, directed by PS Vinothraj. The filmmaker’s debut movie Koozhangal (Pebbles) had been India’s official selection to the Oscars last year, and had also bagged the Tiger Award at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Comedian Soori will be playing the male lead in this film, and this will mark his second film as a protagonist following Vetri Maaran’s Viduthalai.
Talking to us from a village near Madurai, where he is shooting the film, Vinothraj tells us, “The film will capture the journey of the two characters played by Anna Ben and Soori. ” He informs that the two actors will be paired opposite each other.
Interestingly, the film is being bankrolled by actor Sivakarthikeyan. The film’s co-producer Kalai Arasu says, “We had seen Pebbles some timeago and we liked it very much. We felt joining hands with a filmmaker like Vinothraj would be a great opportunity. ”
Elaborating on why they roped in Anna Ben, Kalai says, “The director was very clear that we needed a solid performer, and felt Anna Ben would be perfect for the vision he had for the female lead’s character. ”
He clarifies that even though Soori is playing the lead, the film is not a light-hearted rural film. “It is a film about human emotions, an intense drama with Soori as the kadhaiyin nayagan. You will see the actor in Soori and not the comedian,” he says.
Ganesh Siva, who edited Koozhangal, is also the editor for this film, which will have cinematography by B Sakthivel. “We are shooting the film with live sound, so we are yet to decide on the music director,” adds Kalai.
