Amy Jackson has started 2024 with a bang. After a gap of six years, the actress has returned to starring in Indian films with Mission Chapter 1. She talks to us about her return to Tamil films, how she being a career-driven mother will positively impact her son, Andreas, and her plans of turning a director.
Mission Chapter 1 is your first Indian film after 2.0 (2018). How was your experience working on a Tamil film? It’s good to be back! Mission Chapter 1 was such a great project to work on. It was my third time working with director Vijay, who has always written strong roles for me. It was a real challenge, as it was different from what I had done before, but I loved it. Working with Arun Vijay and Nimisha was fantastic. They were a joy to be around, and there was a positive vibe on set.
You had said that seeing his mother work would be great for your son’s upbringing. Can you elaborate on this statement?I want to instil a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility in my son. He witnesses my love and dedication to work. I hope that inspires him to develop similar qualities in whatever he chooses to do. It also helps in dismissing the traditional gender roles and inspires him to recognise that both men and women can excel in their careers.
Has there been a change in your approach to success from Madrasapattinam to now?Definitely. Success is closely tied to our ability to take immediate actions towards our goals, something that wasn’t as apparent back when I was 16. I was just riding the wave then. Now, success for me, as a career-driven mother, is not solely measured by financial wealth or box office hits but also by personal development, relationships, and contribution to others, which I prioritise through my charities.
What do you have to say to your fans who want to see you do movies more frequently?
I’m back! I’m beyond grateful to them for their love and support. They’re the reason for any success I have had, and they have welcomed me back with open arms.
Is there a role you’ve played that’s closest to you?A lot of my characters have been larger than life, and it was interesting to get into their mindset. The role with similarities to myself would be Diya in I (2015), as she also came from a modelling background and did anything for love.
Are you interested in other aspects of cinema, like direction or writing?Definitely. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me. I would write poems and stories throughout high school, and even through the pandemic, writing was a medium for creative expression. I’ve combined my love for writing with my knowledge and life experiences over the years and written a short film, which I’ll also be directing. We start filming in March 2024.
How do you manage your work in different languages , even across continents, simultaneously?Because of a great support system. For me, family is everything.
