We had told you that actress
Amala Akkineni will be making a comeback in Tamil cinema after 28 years in a film starring
Sharwa
of Engaeyum Eppothum fame and
Ritu Varma. The movie, titled Kanam, will also have a sci-fi element, reveals its director
Shree Karthick, who has directed TV commercials, short films and a web series, is making his feature film debut with this film.
“The film is a feel-good sci-fi drama. The core of the film is about the bond between a mother and a son. It is a time travel movie, and will be a nostalgic experience for audiences,” says the debutant, and adds “The story will be a balanced mix of sci-fi and drama. The time travel element will not just be a tool for the drama. It won’t be too technical. The concept will be simple, enjoyable and kindle your memories.”
He states that it was the film’s producer, SR Prabhu, who suggested that he make this one as a bilingual film. “He felt that the subject would work in both Tamil and Telugu as the story’s emotions are universal and the script had the potential to work well in Telugu as well,” he elaborates.
He assures that the film will be a perfect comeback for both Sharwa and Amala. “Sharwa might not have created a space for himself in Tamil yet, but, he is a star in Telugu. This one will be a comeback for him in Tamil. For Amala ma’am, too, it will be a special one, as she’s returning to Tamil films after 28 years. The story is a very personal one for me and I wrote it for my mom. So, right from the writing stage, I had decided that Amala ma’am should play the mother character as, with her genial smile, she has a positive persona. We were not even sure if she’d agree, but we decided to try and she said yes after the initial hearing itself. She has become the USP of the Tamil version. She will be seen in the role of a singer. Her combination scenes with Sharwa have worked out big time for us.”
The team has shot the Tamil and Telugu versions with different supporting actors, informs Shree Karthick. Ramesh Thilak and Sathish play Sharwa’s friends in the Tamil version while Priyadarshi and Vennela Kishore play the same characters in the Telugu film, which is titled
Oke Oka Jeevitham
. The technical team has cinematographer Sujith Saarang, music director Jakes Bejoy and editor Sreejith Sarang, who were part of films like Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru & the production designer Sathish Kumar, who did Master.
