A world of mirrors - Mani Ratnam's style to express romance!

Mani Ratnam is one of the classic directors in the Indian film industry and he has explored all genres from simple romance to epic historic dramas. He is one such director who expresses the emotions in his scenes through visuals and not through words. Especially, his romance scenes are always a beautiful watch on the screen as it simply expresses one's emotions. The director has a signature of using mirror shots and it has become his signature style as well. Here are a few films in which the director used mirrors to express romance.

Alaipayuthey

Alaipayuthey is a romantic drama featuring Madhavan and Shalini in lead roles. The film is a cult classic and the director in this film uses the mirror to capture the the desires, intimacy and loving gaze shared between the couple. The mirror also acts as an added advantage to the romantic scene.

Ayutha Ezhuthu

Ayutha Ezhuthu is a political action film featuring Suriya, Madhavan, Siddharth, Trisha and Meera Jasmine in lead roles. The film being more focussed on the youth political movement, it has his parallel plot with romance. Mani Ratnam in this scene, tries to ascertain the dominance and the deep relationship between the young married couple Madhavan and Meera Jasmine even after days of separation.

Roja is a romantic thriller film featuring Aravind Swami and Madhoo in lead roles. The director tries to explain the romance between a husband and wife who fall in love after their wedding. Mani Ratnam also uses this technique to show how the male lead confronts his desires and love to his wife.

Iruvar

Directed by Mani Ratnam, 'Iruvar' is a political drama featuring Mohanalal, Aishwarya Rai and Prakash Raj in lead roles. In the film, the director used the mirror to show Mohanlal looking and admiring at Aishwarya Rai who looks exactly like his wife who passed away. In this scene, the director tries to explain the contrast and complex of emotions that Mohanlal feels.
