Horror-comedy films have been the toast of Kollywood for a while. Going by the trailer of the Santhanam-starrer Dhilluku Dhuddu, which is slated to hit screens on July 7, one could be under the impression that this film is the latest to join the bandwagon. However, director Rambhala says that his film is quite different, and that it is devoid of the several clichs such films have resorted to in recent times. Of late, most of the horror-comedy films which are releasing here deal with people who get intimidated in a deserted bungalow or haunted house. But Dhilluku Dhuddu has few characters who are brought to a house by a villain to avenge the hero for falling in love with his daughter, he says, and adds, This is different from the usual baddie (read heroines fathers) who either sends his henchmen or uses his influence to scare the hero.

While Santhanam and debutant Shanaya play the lead roles, Bollywood actor Saurabh Shukla plays the villain, and his character has a tinge of comedy. We had many actors in mind, but felt Saurabh sir was apt for the role. Similarly, we searched a lot for the role of heroine, and it was Manikandan, the director of Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya, who suggested Shanaya, he adds. According to him, the film will be a break for Santhanam and will take him to the next level.
