64 years of Sivaji Ganesan's 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman': The movie that led to the birth of periodic films in Kollywood

The Tamil classic - 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman' was released in 1959. Starring Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and Padmini in lead roles, the film was a Tamil classic adopted from real events. The movie was made after the king Veerapandiya Kattabomman who went against the British East India company and denied to pay taxes. Directed by VR panthulu, the movie, even now, after 64 years is still considered a successful hit.

The birth of periodic films in Tamil

'Veerapandiya Kattabomman' was the first Tamil film that achieved to attract people's attention on a periodoc film. The film was a super hit. The film's plot revolved around King Kattabomman who was one of the revolutionist when British occupied India. The film was premiered in London 10 days before its release in Tamil Nadu and the movie became a major success world wide.

The first Tamil film to receive international award

The film was the first to receive an International Film Award. The film after it's release was critically acclaimed and became the first film to receive the Best Film, Best Actor and Best Music Director at the 1960 Afro-Asian Film Festival in Cairo. The movie also got the National Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

A cult status

The film left a cult status for itself with powerful lines. The movie is still considered to be one of the best in Tamil cinema and the dialogues and monologies in the film still serves as a barrier for any actor or actress who sets a basic level acting for them. The film was a landmark for Gemini Ganesan's career in the movie industry. It became a trendsetter and the film was an acting benchmark for dialogue delivery.

Re-releases

The film made it's first re-release in theatres in 1984 as it completed 25 years and it was later released again in 2015 for the third time. In 2012, the film made its digital premiere as well. The movie was reportedly said to be made in 3D in 2013, however that did not happen. The re-releases were received well as the movie was developed and edited according to the current digital system and it made Rs 5,53,000 when re-released in 2015 in Tamil Nadu.
