22 Years of fire & feelings: Why 'Kaakha Kaakha' still lives in our hearts

The film ‘Kaakha Kaakha’, released on July 23, 2003, marked a major turning point for Tamil cinema’s urban police action genre. Director Gautham Vasudev Menon's polished script, intense fight scenes, music, romance, and emotions – all of these combined to make the film memorable to this day. Suriya and Jyotika played lead roles, and their on-screen chemistry turned the film's major bonus. It is a great achievement that even after 22 years, Suriya's character as "Anbu Chezhiyan" remains etched in the minds of fans.

2/6

A new kind of police hero

‘Kaakha Kaakha’ revolutionized the way police officers were portrayed in Tamil cinema. Suriya played Anbu Chezhiyan – an officer who was deeply devoted to his duty and yet humane. Unlike the heroes we had seen before, Gautham Menon simply showed the true nature of policemen living in distress. This changed the audiences' perspective.

3/6

The love story that felt real

Maya, played by Jyothika, plays the role of an honest teacher who brings hope and peace to Anbu Chezhiyan's life. Their love scenes are anything but ordinary – the soft lines, the well-written dialogues, and the unending sorrow of that love – all of which have haunted me since the film's release. It is a well-known fact that this film was the beginning of Suriya-Jyotika's love story, not just for the fans.

4/6

Harris Jayaraj’s soundtrack still hits hard

‘Kaakha Kaakha’ would not be the same without Harris Jayaraj’s music. Songs like 'Uyirin Uyire, 'Ennai Konjam', and 'Ondra Renda' brought the sweetness and sorrow of love to music. The BGM composed by Harris for the fight scenes and love scenes was excellent. It is also a matter of pride that this music has found a place in the playlists of fans to this day.

5/6

Pandya – the villain who terrified us all

Jeevan as villain Pandya - considered one of the most fearsome villains in Tamil cinema. The effects, crises, and sense of revenge in the life of a police officer all drive the story forward. The entire screenplay is full of twists and turns. The way Anbu Chezhiyan maintains his integrity and the emotional climax that left the audience excited.

6/6

From cult film to classic legacy

The film ‘Kaakka Kaakka’ was not just Suriya’s breakthrough – it became a historical work that mixed police and love. The film’s popularity does not decrease with each passing year. So far, memes, dialogue videos, and TV re-telecasts from this film have been going viral. Even now, when fans say 'Anbu Chezhiyan', a minute of silence begins. This is the true success of a film.
