'Ponniyin Selvan’ is a film that is coming to light after so many years. It was first planned in 1964 by MG Ramachandra to adapt the film from the novel written by Kalki, later in 1989, Kamal Haasan purchased its rights. However, it is only now that after so many years, Mani Ratnam has completed the work for the film, and is scheduled to release this month.

Although ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ was adapted from the novel written by Kalki, the movie script was written by Jeyamohan, Kumaravel, and Mani Ratnam. In a recent interview with the media, writer Jeyamohan reportedly revealed that during the initial casting of the film, the team considered actor Vijay to play the role of Vanthiyadevan and Mahesh Babu to play the role of Arunmozhi Varman. However, as both the actors were not able to take up the role, the crew then decided Jayam Ravi and Karthi were perfect to play the roles.

He also added that Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were their first choice to play the roles of Aditha Karikalan and Nandhini.
