Red Label Movie Synopsis: A former student leader is pulled back into campus politics to take on a bully.

Red Label Movie Review: Every Kollywood college film arrives pre-assembled: bully with political connections, righteous hero with a jawline, trembling students awaiting salvation. Red Label doesn't so much build on this template as photocopy it. Kathir (Lenin, who looks the part and then some) is a former college chairman now lying low, weighed down by police cases. Rohit, a timid student, seeks him out after the MLA's (RV Udhayakumar) son Pandian makes campus life unbearable for everyone, especially the women. Kathir is also in love with Pavithra (Azmin Yasar), Pandian's sister who despises her own brother. He initially refuses to get involved, then agrees, and the familiar machinery of election campaigns, confrontations and moral lectures clicks into gear.

We've seen all of this before and the film adds nothing new to justify another pass. Characters exist as pure types: Pandian is vile because the script needs him vile, Rohit is meek because someone has to be the underdog, and Kathir is noble because that's the slot remaining. Nobody behaves in ways that feel discovered rather than assigned. When Pandian bothers a girl on campus, someone calls him out. When he does it again, someone delivers a nearly identical dialogue. The film keeps staging variations of the same confrontation, apparently hoping repetition will pass for emphasis.

Where things pivot is when Karmegam, a rowdy fixed to marry Pavithra, dies in a brawl with Kathir. The cover-up that follows is the film's most interesting stretch, but even here convenience rules. Rohit's bespectacled buddy happens to be the kind of college nerd who can hack a pacemaker. And the dialogue does nobody any favors. Students wander into scenes and ask "Hey, what happened?" when the situation is perfectly obvious. Someone wonders aloud how Pandian discovered a piece of information. These lines exist to spell out what the audience has already clocked, filling space where actual characterization or wit could have lived.

Lenin carries the film. He has the looks, the range and the screen presence to hold your attention throughout. If only the rest of the film matched his energy.

Red Label has enough of a plot to keep you seated, but sits so comfortably in its template that it never once risks surprising you.
