Mylanji Movie Synopsis: A photographer visiting Ooty to document rare birds falls for a sheltered orphan facing a forced marriage, but neither can confess their feelings.

Mylanji Movie Review: The entire plot of Mylanji can be resolved by one person saying "I love you [name]" twice. Once for the shock, once for confirmation. That's it. Film over. Instead, director Ajayan Bala stretches this non-problem into a feature-length exercise in frustration.

Surya (Sriram Karthick) is a photographer in Ooty with some form of childhood trauma that freezes him whenever vulnerability is required. Charu (Krisha Kurup) is an orphan so impossibly sheltered she doesn't own a smartphone. She wants Surya but can't bring herself to say it, so she deflects by bringing up a crush on another man she barely met, Kathiravan Karl Marx (yes, Karl Marx), and asks Surya to help track him down. Surya takes this literally. He actually brings the guy back from Chennai. Charu has a Freudian slip where she blurts out her feelings for Surya and immediately retracts it. He still doesn't get it. You want to reach into the screen and shake both of them.

Making matters worse is the kid who functions as Charu's primary advisor. Loud, persistent, and wrong about everything, he steers the plot with the confidence of someone who shouldn't be steering anything. Kids in films can work, but a loudmouth child driving the narrative is rarely endearing and mostly grating. Then there's a random beating Surya receives from Charu's would-be arranged husband and his buddy, a scene of physical violence that feels airlifted from a completely different film. Charu visits the hospital afterwards, sees him bruised, and just leaves. Innocence? Anxiety? At some point it stops mattering what you call it.

Both leads perform with enough sincerity that you wish the writing gave them something real to work with. Sriram Karthick brings a quiet warmth, and Krisha Kurup looks pretty and sells the nervousness well. Munishkanth and Singam Puli show up in supporting roles that feel like holdovers from a different era. Neither adds much.

Chezhiyan's cinematography is the one undeniable asset. The Nilgiris look stunning.

One could see what the director was getting at with these two innocent souls unable to navigate a territory they're unfamiliar with. The floor is so weak that if you poke it a little, the whole thing collapses like a sinkhole.
