Maya Puthagam Movie Synopsis: An aspiring filmmaker, Guru, plagued by recurring dreams of a magical book and a serpent, ventures into a mysterious forest palace. What unfolds is a tale of ancient curses, invisible protectors, and cinematic ambitions colliding with supernatural forces.

Maya Puthagam Movie Review: The story opens with a prelude voiceover of a revenge-seeking snake guarding a precious stone in an abandoned palace in the middle of a forest. Cut to Guru (Ashok Kumar), who meets with producer Sambasivam (Ilavarasu) on a holy man’s recommendation. Sambasivam sends Guru to check out the dream palace for his film project, even though his son Vikram (Dasarathy) tries to stop him, with his own plans. At the palace, Guru finds the book and a portrait of a beautiful girl. As he reads, odd things start happening. Whenever Vikram’s men threaten Guru, an invisible force comes to his rescue. The story then delves into Guru’s connection with the girl in the portrait and the fate of his film project. A flashback reveals Princess Panchamadevi (Abarnathi) as a snake, waiting centuries for revenge.

The first half of the movie crawls along, mostly showing the film crew reaching the palace. Director Rama Jayaprakash, playing Guru’s sidekick Vithagan, attempts some comedy that falls flat. After intermission, the movie shifts gears to a period setting, showcasing a war between Selvapuri and Ratnapuri kingdoms with underwhelming visual effects. Selvapuri, including its ruler Rangaraja Yaadhavrayar (Naren) and Princess Panchamadevi, became slaves to Ratnapuri.

The modern-day fight scenes feel dated, and the special effects are clearly hampered by budget constraints. The love story between Panchamadevi and Yoga Narasimhan is short. The army chief’s (Aruvi Madhan) act of betrayal is unconvincing.

Abarnathi looks pretty and impresses as the valorous Princess Panchamadevi, while Ashok Kumar delivers a decent performance. The song “Kannal Kannal Pesi” stands out, showcasing both Ashok and Abarnathi’s dancing skills. Srikanth’s extended cameo is adequate.

Maya Puthagam is a film that promises magic but delivers mediocrity.
