Leader Movie Synopsis: An undercover agent living as a car mechanic in Thoothukudi must stop a plan to blow up the port using ammonium nitrate.

Leader Movie Review:
Anyone who survived a screening of The Legend in 2022 walked into Leader with the survival instincts of a war veteran. So when the film turns out to be a competently paced, genuinely watchable masala entertainer, credit where it's due. Don't walk in expecting a precision-engineered thriller. It's good in the way a buffet is good: you don't remember individual dishes, but you left full and didn't complain.

Working as a car mechanic near the Thoothukudi port, Sakthivel (Legend Saravanan) is a single father with a fierce affection for his daughter Irene (Iyal). Control of the port rests with local thug Salt (Prabhakar) and his associate, an international operator known as The Devil (Santhosh Prathap). Their plan involves smuggling ammonium nitrate containers into the port, an idea inspired by the 2020 Beirut explosion. Inspector Indra (Andrea Jeremiah) is trying to investigate Salt but keeps getting shut down by compromised superiors. When newly transferred SP Bakthavachalam (Shaam) arrives, the investigation gains some backbone. But it's Sakthivel who turns out to be the real wild card, a man with a past far more lethal than his day job suggests.

Writer-director R.S. Durai Senthilkumar structures this as a relentless series of action and emotional montages, and the approach works because nothing sits still long enough for you to interrogate it. The stretch leading into the interval is a genuine high point, particularly the sequence where Sakthivel hunts down the right container truck carrying the ammonium nitrate and detonates it. Songs are woven into the narrative rather than halting it, and Ghibran's background score does serious heavy lifting, keeping the film's pulse consistent even when the writing goes slack. The action sequences are well-choreographed and physical enough to register.

Where it stumbles is in a jarring flashback section that drops into Sakthivel's backstory with some odd editing choices. The quasi-nonlinear narration doesn't always land cleanly, and certain stretches crank the masala dial past what even this film can support. Some VFX work, particularly fire and explosions, looks conspicuously unconvincing. There are also some bits of AI drivel in here. Given the otherwise decent production values, these shortcuts feel unnecessary.

Saravanan has noticeably improved since his debut. He's been given a character that plays to his strengths: Sakthivel is glum, serious, and speaks sparingly, and Saravanan maintains that register with consistency. He won't be asked to carry emotional heavy lifting, but he doesn't need to. Andrea, Shaam, and Santhosh Prathap bring strong performances that complement his presence and keep the film's dramatic engine running. The ensemble works as a unit rather than a showcase for any single performer.

Leader never pretends to be something it isn't. Logic will not survive contact with this plot, and anyone searching for coherence will find their patience rewarded with more gunshots and explosions. In all honesty, no one seemed to want anything beyond that.
