Happy Raj Movie Synopsis: A man unlucky in love finally finds a girl who likes him back, but her condition that both families meet puts his oddball father on a collision course with hers.

Happy Raj Movie Review:
Happy Raj opens with a problem that too many films share: it doesn't trust its audience to figure things out on their own. The first fifteen minutes play like one of those explainer videos, walking you through Kathamuthu's (George Maryan) backstory in a flat, narrated stretch that lays out his history, how he came to be nicknamed Kuthirai Mutta (horse egg, because of his face), and how his son Anandh Raj aka Happy (GV Prakash) inherited the family reputation. It's all context, no cinema, and by the time the actual story begins, you've already sat through a prologue that's barely arresting.

Happy is good-intentioned but a bit of a knobhead, unlucky in love and slow on the uptake. His dad is a miserly school teacher, and the combination of the two has made Happy something of a local joke. The body shaming that begins with Kathamuthu's nickname doesn't stay with him, it carries across to Happy and stretches across generations, revisited so often that what starts as a running gag turns into something oddly mean-spirited. When Happy lands a job at an IT company in Bangalore and meets Kavya (Sri Gouri Priya), the film finds its groove. Kavya actually likes him, but her condition is that his family formally approach hers. Her father Rajiv (Abbas, returning to Tamil cinema after over a decade) is an NRI, and when he collides with Kathamuthu, the culture clash between the city-bred father and the village traditionalist becomes the film's engine. Parts of the fathers' boxing showdown are enjoyable, though it mostly feels contrived. There are way too many convenient scenes with exaggerated characters that you just don't buy.

George Maryan is the film's biggest asset. One could even say that it's his film more so than GVP's. He commits with an earnestness that makes even the weaker material watchable, and the father-son dynamic with GV Prakash carries genuine warmth. GV Prakash fits the lovable-loser mould comfortably and lands enough of his comic beats to keep things moving. Abbas brings nostalgia and a certain easy charm to his comeback, even if his character is written with little depth. Gouri Priya holds her own, and the supporting cast, including Adhirchi Arun and Premji Amaran, chip in with enough comic energy to keep the middle stretches afloat. Justin Prabhakaran's music is serviceable.

Forced sentimentality and the all-too-familiar romanticization of tradition keep pulling the film back. Too many scenes feel manufactured, and you are constantly hand-held through the emotive parts. Happy Raj gets by on the goodwill of its cast and a few well-timed laughs.
