Azhagiye Kanne Movie Review: This is yet another week in Kollywood where we get to witness a romantic drama that tackles caste discrimination and honour killing. While these issues continue to plague our society, and it is crucial for filmmakers to highlight them in their work, it is equally important for filmmakers to deliver a story that is not predictable or clichéd.

Azhagiye Kanne, directed by Vijay Kumar, an associate of Seenu Ramasamy, has feel-good moments that one finds in his mentor's films, but it lacks a plot that's inventive and engaging.

The film introduces us to Inba (Leo Sivakumar), an aspiring filmmaker, who lives with his family in a small town near Dindigul. He spends most of his time writing dramas and staging theatre plays. Kasthuri (Sanchita Shetty), his neighbour, falls in love with him, after he helps her stage a play for her college culturals. They belong to different communities, and get married against the wishes of their families. The couple decides to live the rest of their lives in Chennai, as Inba gets the opportunity to work with director Prabu Solomon and Kasthuri joins an IT firm. They are even blessed with a baby girl. When things seem to be going well, a person from Kasthuri's family decides to take vengeance on Inba! What happens next is the crux.

Azhagiye Kanne is decently made in terms of cinematography, music, and other technical aspects. But then, the plot is weak and the film takes its own sweet time to get into the real conflict. In fact, the antagonist enters the lives of the protagonist only after a few years after his married life. The set-up lacks newness and it is tough for us to connect with the plight of the central characters as the events aren't strong enough. Even the performances by the actors give us the feel of a decade-old film. Sanchita Shetty's role is a bit mature, and she looks markedly different from how we've seen her so far.

There are a few good moments, like the portions involving an elderly lady who comes forward to take care of Kasthuri's kid, and the bond she forms with the kid. These scenes make us understand why it's important for parents to be with their kids.

The film's intentions are good in places, but the writing is weak and lacks surprises or twists. This formulaic storytelling is what makes Azhagiye Kanne a forgettable experience.
