Theatre enthusiasts in Gurgaon will get a chance to experience the internationally acclaimed play – Untitled – by Lushin Dubey as part of the Times Gurgaon Festival. Lushin, who has performed the play in different parts of the world, is excited about her debut Gurgaon performance and is looking forward to meeting the young and dynamic audience of the city.
Untitled, currently in its 11th year of running, is inspired by Vijayadan Detha’s Nyari Nyari Maryada and Dario Fo’s Medea, and is directed by Arvind Gaur. But Lushin says, “We have not stuck to a script and have constantly been adding elements keeping in mind the times.”
Untitled tells the story of a woman, who decides to step out from the boundaries set by society. It is her journey to go beyond her usual role and find meaning in her existence. In this solo act, Lushin will be accompanied by wooden puppets, which will be voiced and functioned by her. “This is one of my most challenging acts. I voice 12 characters, each completely different from the other. Ironically, in this play, the male characters are in the form of wooden puppets, which is such a contrast to life as we know it,” she tells us.
Known for her performances in plays like Salaam Bombay and I Will Not Cry, Lushin feels it is important to be exploring forms of theatre to have a greater impact on the audiences. She says, “I have worked on a lot of issues and have made sure that I handle the topics in a different light each time. So, while Salaam Bombay was a comedy, I Will Not Cry was a satirical spoof. Even in Untitled, I have tried to use humour. But it is even more challenging to portray serious subjects using that tone, and still make an impact.”
About the current atmosphere, Lushin says, “The Delhi gang-rape has affected me and everyone in society. Untitled is a very interactive play and I converse with the audiences. I think now is the time that people step out of their shells and discuss these issues, because only then can we move to the next step of finding solutions.”
Untitled will be staged on Friday, March 1, at the Showshaa Theatre at Kingdom of Dreams.
The Times Gurgaon Festival will be on from Feb 28 -March 3. Complimentary invites are available at The Times of India office at Vatika Triangle, Sushant Lok-1, MG Road, Gurgaon, or the Indiatimes office at I-World Tower,
