Playback singer and son of legendary musician K J Yesudas, Vijay Yesudas, is on a roll. And not just because he has a plethora of singing offers, but also because the handsome hunk is acting in a Malayalam film titled Avan. Ask him about his acting debut and he starts off excitedly, “It is a commercial flick and has two heroes. Actor Bala also has a meaty role in the film.
Nandan Kavil is directing the film.”
On his role, Vijay says that he plays a playback singer. He adds, “It’s the story of a present generation singer. I play the role of a Mumbai-based singer who comes to the south to sing in films. My character is uber cool. The director made sure I didn’t have to sweat it out too much with the emotions and melodrama.”
With the talkie portion of the film complete, Vijay will soon start shooting for the film’s songs. Debutant Anil Gopalan is composing music for the film. Revealing another interesting aspect of the film, Vijay continues, “The film has appa (K J Yesudas) singing one song for my role — It’s an honour for me and I am unable to express my feelings.” Vijay too has sung two songs and has great expectations from the song Thozha... in particular.
Talking about his acting experience, he says, “Though I didn’t prepare in a big way for the film, I was happy that I felt comfortable in front of a camera. Perhaps my tryst with theatre during my college days helped me.”
So, will he be seen in more films? “No, I don’t intend to make acting my career,” he says, “There are fabulous actors around and I would like to stick to singing, which is my forte.”
Apart from this, Vijay will also appear in two reality shows on TV. Ask him if the Film Chamber’s (Kerala) decision not to allow playback singers and actors to be part of television shows will affect his television plans and he says, “I have been signed on to do the Tamil version of Music Ka Muqabla and soon will sign on the dotted line for another reality show. As I’ll appear only in Tamil channels, I don’t think I will have anything to worry about.”
