Ramya may have been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately — for threatening to quit Sandalwood and then promptly being banned from the industry for her reported unprofessional behaviour — but the actress now seems determined to put all that behind her. The Sanju Weds Geetha star has joined the Youth Congress in the hope of spreading political awareness among youngsters.
“I’ve just enrolled myself as a member of the Youth Congress. My aim is to create awareness among the youth about political activities. Today’s youth can change anything. I have also decided to prepare youngsters to join the Congress party,” says Ramya, who has no plans to contest elections just yet.
And Ramya credits her decision to Rahul Gandhi. “Rahul is a youth icon and I’m taking the political plunge because of him. I love his principles and his political agenda. In fact, I recently had the opportunity to meet him and I had a long discussion with him about politics,” she explains, adding, “For me, politics doesn’t mean just talking, but doing more work. I want to change the system, which is quite corrupt. If we have the power, we can terminate corruption. And that’s possible only among the youth and I want to encourage them to do this.”
Ramya also maintains that she will not quit films because of this new role she’s taken on. “I haven’t told anyone that I would quit the industry because of politics. My first priority is acting. I have some projects lined up that I need to finish. So there’s no question of me quitting the film industry,” she says.
And it seems that she doesn’t have reason to quit, seeing that her latest film, Sanju Weds Geetha, has done well at the box office. “I was thrilled to hear that Sudha Murty and Narayana Murthy watched the film. We didn’t have time to promote the film before its release, but people have still come to watch it. That’s more than enough for me,” she signs off.
