Pop art posters in Ollywood

Anubhav Mohanty reveals the pop art posters of ‘Matric Fail’ — a first in the Odia film industry
Pop art posters in Ollywood
Film posters in Ollywood haven’t been very innovative. But all that could see a change. Check out the interesting posters of “Matric Fail” featuring the movie’s lead stars — Anubhav and Barsha — in a completely new avatar. Such poster designs have never been tried out in the mainstream format of Ollywood movies.
It’s a fact that Sudhakar Basant, along with the members of his unit, had wanted to come up with something that would be a trendsetter of sorts in Ollywood.

Says Anubhav, “The film is for youngsters and lookwise, we wanted something that is very hatke. That’s why we insisted on using creatives that are not like the run of the mill film posters. Our designer in Bhubaneswar, Azhar Ali, likes to think out of the box. Barsha, Azhar and I brainstormed and came up with the idea of using two different looks in the posters. While one of them posters has Barsha and I dressed in all regal finery, we went for an all-complete Western look for the other poster.”
While some have compared the looks of Anubhav and Varsha from the above poster with that of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi, Anubhav says there is no religious connotation to the look. “We wanted to be funky and cool. There are absolutely no religious undertones. The idea is to do something that attracts those young at heart. That’s why I went for a royal look and yet flaunted a mobile phone,” he says.
Meanwhile, designer Ali is excited with the response. “I’m not professionally trained but I like experimenting. Bollywood often does interesting stuff with posters. So we thought why not be creative in Ollywood as well? That’s why I tried out these layouts. Despite being a regional industry, there is no reason why we can’t innovate. I hope, other posters try something different,” Ali says.
Well, we’ll watch out for the change!
