Vithagan! Sounds quite crafty, doesnt it? When the name of the film itself is so amusing, imagine the screenplay. And the man behind this interesting project is none other than witty actor Parthiban who is back, wielding the megaphone after Ammuvagiya Naan. Vithagan is very close to my heart. It is not the usual action entertainer. It is like a Rubiks cube game, where everything falls into place at the end.
Commenting on his role in the film, the actor says, Vithagan is about a skilled cop who is also crooked and cunning at the same time.
Hence, the title. I play AC Routhran who solely depends on his brains to catch crooks. Even if there are 1,000 villains confronting him, he overcomes them with his shrewdness.
So, being a part of an action flick, is Parthiban sweating it out in the gym for a six-pack? May be three-and-a-half, he quips. But I have a very different look in the film.
Although Vithagan is b eingbilled as an action entertainer, its not devoid of romance. Even brigand Veerappan would have had a romantic side, wouldnt he? Similarly, Routhran has a soft side and there is a good dose of romance in the film. The songs are quite appealing to youth and Joshua Sridhar, the music director of the film, has done a great job. I have penned the lyrics for all the six songs in the film.
An additional attraction is the costumes by Nalini Sriram. She has given a sleek youthful and urbane look to the film. MS Prabhu handles the camera and Antony had done the editing.
Parthiban is known for his ability to discover a new female face every time he dons the directors cap. But for Vithagan, the actor chose Poorna who debuted with Bharath in Muniyandi Vilangiyal Moondramandu. Even for Vithagan, there was a massive hunt. I was looking for an actress who could express love through her eyes and Poorna fit the bill. Initially, she was unsure but when I narrated a few scenes of the film, she couldnt say no, says the actor.
Poorna plays Mercy, a Christian girl who is an ardent Jesus devotee. The way in which she falls for Routhran is to watch out for. Almost all the romantic scenes are in dream sequences. Isnt that interesting? he asks.
But wasnt donning so many hats for a single project quite a task? In a way, yes! But the film is so special to me. That is the reason I have used some of the best technicians in the industry. Earlier, I had never relied on big names nor have I worried about the box-office success. All that mattered to me was creative satisfaction. Even today, when I look back at Housefull or Kudaikkul Mazhai, I feel overjoyed. I love making quality films. I may lose out on my bank balance but these films gratify my ego.
Prod more about Vithagan and Parthiban states, We are planning to shoot in Pondicherry, Coonoor and Dindigul and the songs will be canned in Czechoslovakia and Germany. But with the swine flu triggering panic all over the world, I wonder whether we will be allowed to go there.
With Parthibans period film Ayirathil Oruvan also inching towards completion, the actor is all excited. The film should be out in July. After that, I will start working on Vithagan round-the -clock.
