Four upcoming films revolve around journalists; stories set against media as the backdrop
Media takes centrestage in Mollywood
Theme ‘media’ is going to rule Mollywood over the next few months. There are as many as four films that revolve around journalism that are already in the pipeline.
Director Deepan’s next, The Newsmaker, explores the world of broadcast media. Mollywood superstar Mammootty essays the role of a journalist. “It’s a take on responsible journalism. Today, for the sake of TRPs, the media doesn’t mind sensationalising an event.

The Newsmaker is about such issues and how such sensational news affects the lives of the victim,” says Vinod Guruvayoor, who has written the script. It also stars Sethu (of Mynaa fame), Nedumudi Venu and a few fresh faces.
Joshiy’s next, Run Baby Run, is a story that is set at a news channel. The film sees yet another Mollywood superstar, Mohanlal, essaying the role of the cameraman. Amala Paul plays a senior editor. “It’s more about the relationship between the two people, which blooms amidst a variety of news related issues,” says Sachi, who has written the script.
The cast also includes Biju Menon, Sreerekha, Siddique and Sai Kumar, among others. Director Venugopan’s next, The Reporter, talks about a real life incident that rocked Kerala in the recent past. An investigative story, the movie will have Ananya playing the title role.
“It’s a take on the significance of media in that particular incident. It is about how the media dealt with the issue and how they brought to light the intricate details,” says Venugopan, the flick’s director. The cast also includes Kailash, Abhinaya and Jagathy Sreekumar among others.
Sudhir Ambalapadu is gearing up for his next, Breaking News Alive, which stars Kavya Madhavan and Vineeth in the lead. With so many films on journalism and media, it sure does look like people are trying to make a point out here.
