In recent times, rumour was rife that a Kannada actor was looking at shifting base to Mumbai to further her career. And if that wasn’t enough, it was said that the actor had also signed up with a hot shot talent agency to help her cause. But the lady in question,
Nidhi Subbaiah, is quick to rubbish this rumour, at least part of it. “I have been making umpteen trips to Mumbai, but that was for the shoots of TV commercials and print ads.
I used to do that even before I got into films. It’s not a new development. I haven’t moved to Mumbai. As for the news about the agency, yes, I have signed up with a wonderful agency and they are getting me some plum assignments,” clarifies Nidhi.
What about talk that she’s moving to Mumbai also because she has a boyfriend tucked away there? “That’s a load of lies! I am only in love with myself,” she chuckles.
The actor, meanwhile, seems quite happy in the space she is in right now and if her detractors were expecting her to be languishing at home over the debacle of her last release Kanteerava, Nidhi shows no trace of unhappiness. “I was high on the success of Pancharangi and received rave reviews for my bubbly girl role in it. So when the offer to play a different character, that of a demure Iyengar girl, came my way, I thought it’d be a welcome change for the audience. I wanted to take a shot at doing a performance-oriented role,” she tells us. But what about the unconventional climax in the film that drew the ire of some critics.
The scene involved Nidhi being dug out of a grave with hero Vijay tying a mangalsutra around her neck. Wasn’t she apprehensive of doing such a scene and the impact it would have on her fan base? “For me, the film I’m doing at a particular time is the best. And that includes all its scenes and songs. I have no regrets about what I have done. Even when a film flops, I have no hard feelings. As an actor you put in your best. The rest is up to the audience,” she says.
Nidhi, however, seems to have realized what her fans expect of her, which is why she has signed another film in which she will essay a bubbly character. “I won’t claim that it is different from what I’ve done so far. My role in Krishnan Marriage Story was offered to me because director Nuthan Umesh loved my boisterous character in Pancharangi. It’s a feel-good film and people will like me in it,” she says.
And while her career graph has been picking up slowly and steadily, Nidhi is in no hurry to up the ante. After Krishnan Marriage Story, she will focus on Shoki, her next project. “Shoki stars got four guys along with me. I play a painter in it and we have an actual artist on the sets to show me the nuances of painting. If all goes well, this role should get me a lot of recognition,” she states.
So, is she like her contemporaries trying to make inroads in Tamil and Telugu films? “As an actor, I will go wherever work takes me. I was recently ranked fourth in the Times Of India Hottest Female of 2010 poll, which is a nationwide survey, So let’s see what’s in store for me,” she adds.
