G-Town’s contemporary moves
They are young, but not restless to grab any opportunity that comes by. Meet G-Town’s current lot of creative young guns, who believe in treading a different path. And thinking contemporary is one such move the current crop of actors, seem to be making these days. After a series of Gujarati films meant for the urban audience hit the screens, there is a seen a sudden surge in eagerness to stick to scripts that are contemporary and have a strong storyline.
1x1 polls
Rather than grabbing any Gujarati movie offer, giving importance to the genre, the cast and the content is what everyone unanimously emphasizes these days. Divyang Thakkar who won praises for his commendable performance in Kevi Rite Jaish, apart from finalising Gollywood film offers is doing TV commercials. Divyang says, “After the recent success of urban centric Gujarati movies, more such scripts are now getting written. So, it will take about three to four months for actors to come across a promising script. Till I come across one, I would like to continue doing ads and other theatrical projects.”
Actor-director Naitik Rawal, who is now keeping himself busy with the Gujarati show Niharika after his film Chaar, says. “Right now, being part of a good project is what I am concentrating on now.”
Director Ashish Kakkad, who is in the process of getting his script ready after Better Half, is keen on exploring the potential in the new talent. While producer-director Deepak Antani had roped in new talent for his recently released film Preetam Apdi Pehli Preet which deals with a contemporary storyline. Producer Kathan Trivedi too is gearing up to release the contemporary Gujarati thriller Murder Mysteries soon.
Sohan Master whose recent release Bhale Padharya… Welcome to Gujaratdid get a decent recall value, says, “I am not comfortable doing the typically geet, gaadu and garba kind of entertainers. For the time being I am limiting myself to only Hindi daily soaps. There’s no denying the fact that Gujarati cinema is evolving and there is a lot of scope for a good storyline which is relevant to the times we live in. So I’m waiting for a script with contemporary storyline.” Ria Khokhani, who debuted with Chaar also is keen to work in contemporary Gujarati movies. G-Town’s current flavour, Veronica Gautam says, “I prefer sensible films. I don’t want to do typical naach-gana kind of roles. I am keeping away from mainstream films and I won’t take up films until I get something significant.”
With more emphasis on required change to the hackneyed script, G-Town certainly is thinking different.
