Prominent Punjabi sufi singer Ustad Shoukat Ali Matoi (60), who gave several hits, is battling for his life at a hospital in Ludhiana. He is undergoing treatment for various complications, including heart and kidney. Matoi was also put on a ventilator for some time.
When he was to undergo bypass surgery two days back, doctors noticed a spurt in creatinine range.

He was put on a two-day dialysis round, and responded well, but his dengue report came positive. “His condition is quite critical. The main ailment related to the heart is still untreated as doctors are working to normalise other complications,” said Matoi's younger brother, Sardar Ali, a singer, adding, "We were sure that he will be fine soon, but then it's taking time. Sai Ji mehar karange and he will be back with us soon. His HB levels dipped due to dengue and was given blood twice. We are just waiting for him to recover so that heart surgery can start."Ali added that Ustaad ji is unconscious. Shoukat Ali, whose native village is Matoi in district Sangrur, is a known face in Punjab. While Punjabi singer Sardool Sikander considers him as his elder brother, various other singers share a close bond with him. "We have done Ardaas at Sai Ji's darbar and I am hopeful that sab sahi ho jaega," said Ali, who remained his junior for 10 years. He learnt the art of sufi singing from his elder brother. "Only after taking gyaan from him, I created my own group. For me he's everything."
