song soon. Excerpts from a conversation with the young singer.
Q: What’s your musical influence?
It all started from my childhood. My father was a devotional singer, I used to listen to him while he rehearsed at home. I always tried to copy him and eventually I realized that I have those sparks of singing in me as well. I started participating in school singing competitions and won a lot of prizes. As growing adult,
Satinder Sartaaj is someone who has been a great source of influence and inspiration.
Q: How did you come up with the song, 'Doraemon'? When Punjabi musicians are making songs on girls, glamour and romance, why did you decide on a cartoon theme?
There are multiple reasons. Firstly, this character is quite popular among the age group of 5-30 years. Basically, the aim was to target more audience. Secondly, the idea was to come up with a cute, innovative and lovable song because that’s what our audience wants. Moreover, this song addresses women and their emotions. It co-relates with a girl’s feeling when she is in love. Doraemon cartoons does the same, it streams on television almost whole day/night, no matter what time you turn it on, just like a girl thinks about her love all the time, and that’s how we came up with this theme.
Q: Do you think there is a lot of competition in your profession?
Exposure and shows are the two biggest things artists are competing for these days. I will not mention a record deal because honestly that is becoming a thing of the past. Today it is far too easy to obtain all the resources one would need to build an actual, lucrative, legit music career without a deal.
Q: What kind of challenges did you have to face during your early days as an
underground artist
?
The moment you are able to raise the bar to a point where your work starts influencing people you start getting noticed as an artist. The biggest challenge was to overcome the initial failures and I was well aware of the scenario that if i take my projects to the music labels, they will not even bother to have a look at my work. It’s obvious, that company wouldn’t invest on a new artist unless they find it worth spending on you. So, I tried using short movies platform to give a push to my singing career and did covers. My next is called, 'Copyright'.
