Punjabi cinema's new avatar has dropped its conventional image of showcasing subtle and simple backdrops. While experimentation and inspiration has a significant role to play in altering its fixed movie-making recipe, the industry is mustering the courage to touch new concepts. Now, it's taking another step in a bid to match Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's penchant for stunning king-size film sets.
Director Amberdeep Singh's ambitious project Ucha Burj Lahore Da, a period drama, which will be set in the era of the sprawling Sikh Empire during pre-colonial period (prior to 1850), sources say, will be the expensive film of Punjabi industry. The writer-director completed script writing in May end after remaining engrossed in the subject since March end when the nationwide lockdown began.
While the glorious past, acts of valour and rise and fall of Sikh Empire, formed under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, will be the film's main theme, opulence and grandeur in sets will make it a magnificent project. "Yes, it's going to be visually stunning," said director Amberdeep Singh, adding, "Exactly the way elaborate sets and themes of SLB's films are." Singh, who will not act in this project, admitted he's working to turn a dream into a reality.

'500 TO 700 PEOPLE WILL BE REQUIRED EVERYDAY'
"It's a taam jhaam vali film. The reason why we can't start shooting soon is because around 700 people are needed on a daily basis to carry out the shoot. Elaborate sets, detailed costumes, forts, palaces... each aspect will match with that period. It will be a high-budget film and there's no chance it can be done in manpower restrictions," said Singh. The film will have Amrinder Gill in the lead besides various seasoned actors including Guggu Gill. "I can't be sure but we are estimating a delay of six to eight months in starting its shooting. Weaponry too will match the era. We have done detailing and trust me, we can't be sure about the budget of the film. To be precise it will be super costly."
