Sukhminder Dhanjal’s wife late Manpreet Kaur Dhanjal left for heavenly abode on May 22nd. Her demise left the Sukhminder disheartened, as not only her passing away left a void in his life, it also showed him another reality of the world; the brutal side of the world. Talking to ETimes exclusively, the director narrated the difficult times he saw right from the moment his wife fell ill, to the time she was cremated.
“I remember she had a little fever, and if times would have been different I might have not taken him to the hospital.
However, the fear of Covid-19 was so much that we didn’t want to take the risk and I rushed him to the hospital and that was a big mistake. She wasn’t Covid positive, but when she went to the hospital and saw the state of the pandemic, she felt so scared that it lead to cardiac arrest”, told Sukhminder Dhanjal.
On one hand, he lost his wife, and on the other hand, there was no one to help him. “Imagine the scenario, we got help from nowhere. My wife wasn’t suffering from Corona, but people thought she was and thus, no one came close. No one helped me to even carry her dead corpse. It was just me and my 17-year-old daughter who carried Manpreet’s body in our car.”
“Even at the hospital, no one helped us. But later, just outside the hospital, there were some Muslim guys who said they will take the body from here to the cremation ground. Those men were strangers to me, yet were so helpful.”
“It is so ironic, I remember almost 75 percent of Punjabi industry people have had food made by her. She has always been there for everyone. She not only stood by my side but also helped everyone else. Now that she is not here, I can’t even tell her soul why people didn’t come to stand by her side. People only did formalities on call, many even didn’t do that. Her passing away showed me another side of the world,” he concluded.
The last prayer in respect of late
