During the Maha Shivratri celebrations on February 26, 2025, Marathi actor
Prajakta Mali was slated to present a devotional Shiv Stuti dance inside the Trimbakeshwar Temple complex in Nashik, a revered Jyotirlinga shrine of Lord Shiva. The actor, widely recognised for her work in Marathi cinema and shows such as ‘Pawankhind’, had expressed willingness to participate. However, mounting objections from various groups led to the programme being called off before it could be staged.
Concerns were raised that the performance could attract large crowds to the already busy pilgrimage site, potentially creating safety issues. Officials from the Archaeological Survey of India reportedly advised temple authorities against hosting cultural programmes at the monument. Some former trustees also opposed the event, citing the risk of overcrowding during the festival period.
Addressing the situation through a video message, Mali announced that she would step back from the performance. She clarified that the programme was never meant to receive wide publicity. “It was not intended to be given much exposure and popularity. I never shared event information on my social media handles. I believe that this situation was given unwanted importance. Authorities fear that there will be a stampede-like situation. Everyone apart from me is still performing. I'm taking a step back even though I wanted to perform at the event. I have come to this conclusion after consultation with my family,” she said.
Legal concerns cited under heritage laws
According to The Republic, the ASI reportedly pointed out that organising cultural events within protected monuments could violate provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. The communication also noted that prior permission from the ASI Directorate in New Delhi is required for such activities. Authorities cautioned that large gatherings could pose risks to both public safety and the preservation of the historic site.
Safety and administrative issues
Local stakeholders, including a former trustee, submitted representations to police officials seeking intervention. The primary concern remained the possibility of overcrowding and disruption during one of the temple’s busiest religious occasions. Ultimately, Mali’s withdrawal ensured that the planned Shiv Stuti performance did not take place at the venue.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the
