Actor-director
Hemant Dhome, who has hosted Marathi reality TV show 'Dholkichya Talavar' is on a high and the reason for that is his forthcoming play, 'Gharaat Married, Baher Bachelor', which will be staged in
Dubai
in April end. Unable to contain his excitement, the director of '
Baghtos Kay Mujra Kar
' fame, shares, “I’m really thrilled about the fact that 'Gharaat… ' will open in Dubai. And from May onwards, it will then be taken to Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Baroda, Nagpur and all those places where we have Marathi speaking population.”
One wonders if Marathi plays really have a large audience in Dubai for a play to open there. Ask him this and Hemant says, “There is a huge Marathi speaking population in Dubai and they are fiercely loyal to theatre. I know from past experience, Marathi lovers there are more than happy to buy a
theatre
ticket. Sad part is that TV has ruined theatre and every other medium in India. People see all the leading actors like Ankush Chaudhari, Sai Tamhankar and Swwapnil Joshi on TV post 6 pm for free, so when it comes to buying the ticket for `300 or `500 to watch a play, they are not keen. People are more than ready to spend `3000 to watch
Salman Khan’s film, with this big amount spent on popcorn, coke and tickets. In sharp contrast, the Gujarati audience doesn’t mind spending `1000 on theatre tickets.”
This play, a situational comedy, where Hemant plays the main lead, also has seasoned film and TV actors like
Sanjay Narvekar and Sharvari Lohokare. With three well-known Marathi actors travelling and spending a lot of time together, are there moments when ego clashes tend to happen? To this Hemant replies, “Sanjay and I go back a long way and Sharvari and I have known each other since college days, so there is no question of ego clashes. In fact, Marathi entertainment industry is like small family. All of us hang out at each other’s home and even if someone works with us for the first time, he/she becomes family even before the project is over.”
