Actress Urmila Kanetkar is finally making her debut in theatre with a musical Hindi play Krishnapriya based on the life of Saint Meerabai. The play will be a combination of dance and drama.
Ashwini Kalsekar, a London based dancer-choreographer is choreographing the dance sequences for this play/ballet. The producers of the play Anup Jalota and Sanjana Thakur were looking for an actress who was a trained kathak dancer as well.
Extremely excited about her theatre debut Urmila said, They had seen some of my work and they were convinced that I am a decent actress. As for my dance skills my kathak guru Ashabai Joglekar told Ashwini that I was a trained kathak dancer. Ashwini spoke to me and Sanjana. They saw a few DVDs of my dance performances and I landed with the golden opportunity.
Urmila nurtures a passion for dancing and is enjoying the rehearsals of the play. The play will be staged by the year end. The play is being made on a grand scale and I really hope audiences like it, she says. When asked Urmila why she was away from Marathi theatre, she revealed, To be honest, I was never really approached by many people. I had received a couple of offers long back but I didnt really like them. Meera is the character that I really admire so I think this is the best theatre debut I could have.
